May 9, 1950: Foundation of the European Union

These intense time of commemoration, reviewing the horrors of the past, has called in our awareness our duty against oblivion in order to convey  a message of future, peace and hope to the coming generations.

Some leading statesmen in the postwar era had started an economical cooperation between the former war making nations in order to put a stop to every single fight intent respectively occasions of war conflict. By the foundation of the European Coal an Steel Community (ECSC), Jean Monnet, Robert Schuman, Alcide de Gasperi, Joseph Bech and Konrad Adenauer had layed the foundation stone of an economical collaboration. This collaboration became then a social, and, in a way,  also a political cooperation. The European Union was born on warground in order to lay the foundations for a long-term peace.

In a time, where the European Citizenship suffers headwind and has problems to prevail, in a time, where the European Union is shaked by the economical and financial crisis, it is important to refer to its origin, to remember the historical background against which the military strategy recommended the creation of  lines of fortifications. These durable peace is   one of the targets reached by the European Union, which is forgotten much too often or sometimes even suppressed, although, without this peace, every single economical development, every single social progress would habe been impossible.

By six Information-Panels about

-        The origins of the European Union with the European Coal an Steel Community (ECSC)

-        The ambitions of the European Union

-        The Battle of the Bulge

-        The Élysée Treaty

-        The defence lines Siegfried and Maginot

-        The European Union  in figures and numbers

the very historical past is explained.

These six panels were adopted by the hexagonal monument, which was implemented with Grey-beams and  coalwalls kept by steel grids. A symbolic fresco of Corten steel completes the memorial, which illustrates the facts of combat operations: Death and sacrified youth, plus the future together with men, who took up the cause of „Peace“ and marched on towards the sun.

This memorial along the peaceful valley of Tratterbach shall allow the many tourists and visitors to take a time and to ask questions about this epoch of contemporaneous history, in which each and every one of them is an actor of the society, he wants to evolve in. Situated in the Luxembourg Ardennes, near Bastogne, and also in the centre of the Luxembourgish part of the Battle of the Bulge, the „Domaine du Moulin d'Asselborn“ represents an historical site, which has gone through a millennial history, actually almost the whole history of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. Comprising an „Hôtel-Restaurant“ together with the museum of water mills and located at the crossways of many travel routes an trails, it is one of the essential touristic attractions of the Luxembourg Ardennes.

We intend to finish these Memorial in spring 2014 and to inaugurate it at a date of symbolic importance – at a time which would become a great periode of commemoration and remembrance with several partners still to be contacted and consulted.

Museum of the Watermill and the Milling Process.

With its thousand years the bannal mill of Asselborn  is considered to be one of the most ancient watermills of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. We find its trace for the first time in 1036, when the Abbey of St-Maximine acquired the Asselborn domain through an exchange act with the monastery of Stablo-Malmédy.

The fact to see it mentioned in this act signifies that its foundation is anterior to that date .
